For most implementations, Khan Academy is a curriculum resource, not a complete replacement. As such, aligning a Khan Academy playlist to your curriculum is usually a key component to a successful implementation.

A playlist is a list of Khan Academy skills that you would like your students to focus on. You can share a list with students as you usually do (e.g., paper handouts, on the whiteboard, via your class website, etc).  The option to personalize playlists exists on the Khan Academy site via Coach Recommendations, but the main list should still be via your own system. 


3 steps to curriculum integration:


1. Determine key concepts that students must know using diagnostics, benchmark data or internal assessment.

2. Align key concepts with supporting Khan Academy exercises to create either a foundational playlist OR multiple topic playlists that target specific concepts (e.g., fractions, order of operations, etc).  The following tools might be helpful:

Planning at this level may happen at the unit level or by school term depending on how you are using Khan Academy. Integrating Khan Academy into your curriculum may take a couple iterations and some time to figure out what exercises are best suited. The teachers who seem most pleased with their results usually do the exercises before assigning them to their students.

3. Decide how you want to use the playlists. See a few common approaches below.

To integrate Khan Academy into your units or lessons, check out these guiding questions:

1. Which topics or standards will this unit cover?

Lay out the topics or standards you plan to cover so you can easily search for corresponding KA resources in the next steps.

2. Is every student ready for this unit?

Identify prerequisites for the upcoming unit, and use KA data to find out whether students have completed them. If some students haven't, make sure they complete them before starting the next unit. Meanwhile, students who are ready can get started on the new unit.

3. What assignments do all students need to do?

Preparing a list of assignments for the entire unit enables students to learn and practice content at their own pace.

4. When can I check in with students and what will we focus on? 

Setting milestones helps students focus on appropriate skills (i.e., unit assignments, other topics they'd like to learn) and take responsibility for their learning. Plan how you'll intervene based on data and how you'll refocus students. 

6. How and when will I assess mastery?

This step will help you begin to think through testing in self-paced units.
