Khan Academy Discovery Lab

For Summer 2013, Khan Academy Discovery Lab is offering one-week-long learning sessions that are hands-on and in-person. We believe that project-based learning is critical to how we think and learn, and we are excited to work with your children and develop their skills through fun projects. Your child can register for one or both sessions (up to two weeks).

We believe that every student deserves a chance to learn through engaging projects. We are working hard to provide need-based scholarships to students who are passionate about the Discovery Lab. Apply for a scholarship here.

Session 1: Make Spout bot: An unexpected journey

You'll build "Spout," a fearless robot with bright eyes and sensing antennae! Create your own battery-powered motors and learn how to connect electronic components and circuits as you give Spout the power to traverse the maze of doom. Once you succeed, you'll get the chance to use our Javascript platform to create your own virtual Spout adventure story.

Session 2: Explore how numbers make our world work

Explore how numbers affect the world around us. How does the stock market work, and when should you buy or sell? Have you ever seen a ten-foot-tall balloon sculpture based on math principles? We'll make one together! Through a series of games and activities, we will dive into probability, economics, and fractals. You will also use fun computer simulation games to predict things like how long an ecosystem can sustain itself, and much more.
